Al Ḩudaydah is Yemen's principal Red Sea port and the largest city of the Tihama, the hot, flat coastal plain along the country's western edge. On a map the city stretches along the shore, with the port and its quays at one end, older quarters behind the seafront and a spread of newer neighbourhoods extending inland across level ground.
The port has long been a lifeline for the country, handling a large share of Yemen's imports of food and fuel.
