Al Qiţena lies on the White Nile, south of Khartoum, in the state that takes its name from the river. On a map, the river is the dominant feature, a wide band running roughly north to south. The town's streets line up along the bank, and the grid extends inland from the water in fairly regular blocks.
Around the built-up area, irrigated land follows the river, marked by channels and field boundaries that turn the land beside the Nile into a patchwork. Beyond that, the ground becomes drier and more open, and roads and tracks run out across it toward other settlements in the region.
