Anáhuac lies in the north of Nuevo León, on the flat, dry plains that stretch toward the United States border. From above, it looks strongly planned. Streets form a regular grid of equal blocks, laid out on open ground with few natural obstacles. Beyond the town, straight rural roads and field boundaries continue the geometry across the plain.
The town developed in the twentieth century as a centre for an irrigated farming district that relies on water stored and distributed through dams and canals in the region.
