Aqsay lies in the West Kazakhstan Region, in the open steppe east of Oral and not far from the Russian border. On a map the town is laid out in straight streets and rectangular blocks. Wide empty land surrounds it, crossed by only a few roads and rail lines.
The town is closely tied to the Karachaganak gas condensate field nearby, one of the largest in Kazakhstan, which has shaped local employment and growth. Much of the housing and infrastructure reflects its role as a base for the energy industry and the surrounding district.
