Araripina lies in the far west of Pernambuco, in the semi-arid sertão close to the borders with Ceará and Piauí. It stands near the edge of the Chapada do Araripe, a long flat-topped plateau that dominates the region's landscape.
From above, the town is a compact grid of streets around a central square and church, extending outward along the roads that link it to neighbouring towns. The land around it is open and dry, marked by field boundaries, tracks and scattered settlements, with the plateau's escarpment rising in the distance.
