Arlington, Virginia, sits directly across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. Its land was once part of the original federal district before being returned to Virginia in the nineteenth century. On a map it is a compact, irregular area. The river and the George Washington Memorial Parkway define its eastern edge, and the interior mixes dense corridors with leafy neighbourhoods.
Several of the country's best-known places sit within it. The Pentagon has its unmistakable five-sided footprint, Arlington National Cemetery covers the slopes above the river, and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport lies on the shoreline to the south-east.
