Ashland lies on the south bank of the Ohio River in north-eastern Kentucky, where the state meets Ohio and West Virginia. Its map is shaped by the river: the downtown grid runs along the water, with avenues parallel to the bank and numbered streets running inland. Rail lines follow the riverfront, and wooded hills rise behind the town.
Ashland grew as an iron, rail and oil town, and it was the birthplace of Ashland Oil. It is also known as the hometown of the country singers Naomi and Wynonna Judd. Central Park, a large green space in the middle of the grid, is one of the town's best-known features.
