Asso lies in the south of Wakayama Prefecture on the Kii Peninsula, a region of steep, forested hills that run close to the Pacific coast. In this terrain, settlements follow the valleys, and on a map the houses and roads trace the valley floor while the slopes around them remain largely empty.
Rivers here descend quickly from the mountains towards the sea, and roads run beside them, crossing on short bridges. Fields and small orchards take up whatever flat land the valley allows, leaving the built-up area long and narrow.
