Atalaia lies in the Zona da Mata of Alagoas, inland from Maceió. The town sits in the valley of the Paraíba do Meio River, surrounded by rolling hills covered largely with sugarcane. On a map, the built-up area forms a compact cluster of streets near the river, with roads leading out across the countryside towards neighbouring towns.
The name Atalaia means watchtower in Portuguese. Like many towns in this part of northeastern Brazil, its economy has long been tied to sugarcane, and the surrounding landscape reflects that, with large fields stretching across the hills.
