Atarfe lies a short distance northwest of Granada, on the broad agricultural plain known as the Vega. Its map has two distinct sides: flat land with fields and irrigation channels stretching away to the south and west, and to the north the rise of Sierra Elvira, a compact, rocky range. Between them, a dense older core gives way to newer residential streets.
The slopes of Sierra Elvira hold the remains of Madinat Ilbira, a city that served as a major centre of the region in the early Islamic period, before Granada rose to prominence.
