Ayagoz lies in eastern Kazakhstan, in the Abai Region, on the river of the same name. From above, it is a compact settlement on open steppe. Its streets form a regular grid close to the river, and the railway runs past at the edge of town.
The town is a station on the Turkestan–Siberia Railway, the line that links Central Asia with Siberia, and its layout is shaped by that role. Rail yards and sidings sit alongside residential blocks. Beyond the last streets, the land stretches away almost empty, crossed only by roads and the winding line of the river.
