Balaka is the administrative centre of Balaka District in Malawi's Southern Region, north of Blantyre. The town is compact. On a map its streets form a small cluster around the market and main roads, with the railway line passing close by. Beyond the centre, the pattern quickly loosens into scattered homesteads and fields.
The land around the town is fairly flat and dry compared with the highlands elsewhere in the south, and small households farm much of it.
