Two river arms
The Regnitz divides into two channels and encloses the island town. The result is a long, water-bounded centre crossed by a series of short bridges.

Bamberg Map Poster & Print
Bamberg's old town is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and its plan explains why: it survived the Second World War largely intact. From above, the city divides into three historic parts. The Bergstadt, the hill town, climbs the western hills around the cathedral. The Inselstadt, the island town, sits between the two arms of the Regnitz. The Gärtnerstadt, the market-gardeners' district, spreads across flatter land to the east.
The rivers are what make the map. The Regnitz splits into two channels that enclose the island town, and many bridges cross them in short succession. The Old Town Hall stands on its own small island in the river, between bridges. Just downstream, the old fishermen's houses of Klein Venedig, or Little Venice, line the bank. The streets on the hill side twist upward toward churches and the former imperial cathedral.
A Bamberg map poster shows a city that grew over centuries rather than in a single plan: winding medieval lanes, water on both sides and hills rising to the west. The city is also known for Rauchbier, a smoked beer brewed here for generations. Many people fall for Bamberg while studying at its university or visiting its old town.

Old Town Hall
Built on a tiny island in the river, the Altes Rathaus sits between two bridges, so a public building appears in the middle of the water on the map.
Seven hills
West of the river, the Bergstadt rises across Bamberg's seven hills, each topped by a church or monastery. Its curving streets are a clear contrast to the flatter east.

Bamberg is where many people studied, visited with someone special, or first tried a smoked beer. The city's plan is detailed and irregular, and a single print holds a lot of it. It works well in a large format, where the bridges and lanes can be traced one by one.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps a graduation year or a wedding date. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 digital files include six sizes up to 24×36″, and matte printed posters with optional wooden frames are also available.
