Baoxing sits in the rolling hill country of western Chongqing, in the Dazu area, a landscape of low ridges, shallow valleys and carefully terraced fields. On a map, the town's streets follow the valley floors, and the built-up area stretches along a few main roads instead of spreading out evenly.
Around the town, the countryside is a dense pattern of small fields, ponds and farm tracks shaped by the slopes. Roads wind to follow the terrain, and village clusters sit on shelves of level ground. The overall effect is intricate but soft, with very few straight lines.
