Bellinzona sits at a narrowing of the Ticino valley, the point where routes coming down from the Gotthard and San Bernardino passes meet on their way to Lake Maggiore and Italy. That position explains the whole map. Steep slopes close in on both sides, the River Ticino runs down the valley floor, and the town fills the gap between them.
The town is best known for its three castles, Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro, which together with their walls are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Castelgrande stands on a rocky hill right above the old town, and a long defensive wall once ran from it across the valley to the river. The historic centre, with its arcaded streets and squares, lies directly beneath.

Roads, railway and river run parallel down the valley, while the old streets bunch together at the foot of the castle hill. The river runs along the valley floor on the west side of town, followed closely by the main road and rail routes heading south.
Valley walls
Mountain slopes close in on both sides, so the street network forms a narrow band with Montebello and Sasso Corbaro on the hillside above.
