Bichena is in East Gojjam, in the Amhara highlands of Ethiopia, on high plateau land at the centre of a farming area. From above it is a modest town with a centre of close-packed streets and roads heading out toward nearby villages. Around it lies a patchwork of fields.
Like many highland towns in Gojjam, Bichena serves as a market and administrative centre for the rural communities around it. Its rhythm follows the farming seasons and the weekly market. The plateau landscape is broad and open, cut through in places by streams and gullies.
