Biñan lies on the western shore of Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the Philippines, just south of Metro Manila. On the map the eastern edge of the city meets the water in a low, irregular shoreline, while the South Luzon Expressway runs north to south through its western side. Between them, the older town centre with its church and plaza forms the densest knot of streets.
Away from the centre, the city has grown quickly. Residential subdivisions with looping, self-contained street patterns sit beside large industrial and business parks, so the map mixes the organic grid of the old town with the planned geometry of newer developments. José Rizal spent part of his early schooling in Biñan, a connection the city still remembers.
