Bria is the capital of Haute-Kotto prefecture, in the centre-east of the Central African Republic. It lies on the Kotto river, and from above, the water and the roads are the main structure. Beyond them, the town spreads out loosely into the savanna, with neighbourhoods separated by open ground.
The area around Bria is known for diamond deposits, and artisanal mining has long been an important source of income. This has influenced patterns of settlement and trade. In recent years, the town has also been affected by conflict, and displacement has changed its outline.
