Burton is in Genesee County, Michigan, and borders Flint to the south-east. From above it follows the standard Michigan pattern: main roads spaced about a mile apart form a large grid. Residential streets, commercial strips and the occasional open space fill each square in between.
The city's growth is closely tied to Flint and the automotive industry that shaped the region in the twentieth century. A Burton map poster shows that suburban and industrial landscape as it is: straight corridors, neighbourhoods of different ages, and highways passing along the edges.
