Caohui lies in the rolling countryside of Chongqing municipality, far from the high-rise centre and the river gorges. From above, the landscape is closely folded. Low hills and small valleys follow one another, and they are cut by roads that rarely take the direct route. The town gathers where the ground allows, and its streets are compact compared with the wide spaces around it.
Like many towns in this part of south-west China, Caohui is surrounded by farmland worked in terraces and small fields.
