Castelfranco Emilia lies on the Via Emilia, the Roman road that runs dead straight across the plain between Modena and Bologna. On a map the town grows outward from that line. A dense historic core sits along the road, and newer neighbourhoods and industrial areas spread over the flat farmland of the Po plain on either side.
Just outside the centre is Forte Urbano, a seventeenth-century papal fortress whose angled bastions are some of the most striking shapes in the area when seen from above. The town is also known for a local legend that tortellini were invented here, supposedly modelled on the navel of Venus, a story it still celebrates every year.
