Cerro de Pasco Map Poster & Print
Cerro de Pasco lies in the central Andes of Peru, on a bleak high plateau at roughly 4,300 metres above sea level. It is one of the highest cities in the world. From above, its most striking feature is not a river or a square but a vast open-pit mine at its centre. Streets and neighbourhoods wrap around the rim, and the city appears to be arranged around a crater.
Mining has defined the city since colonial times, when the silver deposits here were among the richest in the Spanish empire. The pit, known as the Raúl Rojas mine, grew over the twentieth century until it swallowed part of the old town. Around the city, the landscape is open puna grassland, dotted with lakes and scarred by mining waste.
A Cerro de Pasco map poster shows a place like no other. The pit forms a huge void in the middle of the composition, and the streets wrap around it in dense, irregular bands. Lakes and roads scatter across the plateau at the edges. It is a stark, unforgettable image of a city built around the very ground it digs.

Rim neighbourhoods
Neighbourhoods wrap around the pit in uneven bands. Their layout reflects the city's growth around, and sometimes into, the mine.
High puna lakes
Small lakes and open grassland lie around the city on the high plateau. Their irregular shapes scatter across the edges of the map.

For people from Cerro de Pasco and anyone who has worked in Andean mining, this map tells a complicated story in a single image. It is a striking piece, very different from the usual city print.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with the altitude or a date. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir makes the pit especially dramatic.
