Chattanooga lies on the Tennessee River at a point where the water swings through a series of dramatic bends between ridges. The most famous is Moccasin Bend, a near-circular loop just west of downtown. It is easy to recognise from above. Downtown sits on the south bank in a compact grid, while Lookout Mountain, Signal Mountain and Missionary Ridge frame the valley.
The city grew as a railroad junction, a history remembered in the Chattanooga Choo Choo. It also played a key role in the Civil War campaigns of 1863. Today its riverfront includes the Walnut Street Bridge, one of the longest pedestrian bridges in the United States, and the Tennessee Aquarium.

This historic truss bridge, now for pedestrians only, links downtown to the North Shore. It is one of several crossings that stitch the two banks together.
Lookout Mountain
The ridge rises sharply south of the river bend. There the streets stop and the terrain takes over, giving the poster a strong edge.
