Chelambra lies in Malappuram district, in northern Kerala, not far inland from the Kozhikode coast. Like much of this region, it has no hard edge. From above, houses are scattered among coconut and areca gardens, and narrow lanes wind over low hills and down into paddy-filled hollows. Town and countryside run into each other with no clear line.
That is what makes it interesting on a map. There is no grid and no single centre. Instead, a busier main road forms a spine, and a network of curving lanes branches off it to follow the contours. Small ponds and wetland strips mark the low ground, so the landscape shows through even in pure line work.
