Chhatarpur is in the Bundelkhand region of Madhya Pradesh. It is named after Maharaja Chhatrasal, the Bundela ruler who fought the Mughals in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. The town grew as a local centre of that kingdom. On the map, its oldest streets form a dense, irregular core, with busier main roads leading outward in several directions.
Like many towns in Bundelkhand, Chhatarpur has old water tanks, built reservoirs that store monsoon rain. On a map these appear as smooth open shapes inside and around the town. The land beyond the edge is open and often rocky, with fields and scattered villages along the roads.
