Chichibu Map Poster & Print
Chichibu occupies a basin in western Saitama, enclosed by mountains on almost every side. The Arakawa River runs through it in a deep, winding course, and the town is built on the flat terraces above the river. From above, the street network fills the basin floor and stops sharply where the forested slopes begin, so the outline of the town follows the terrain closely.
The town centre grew around Chichibu Shrine, and every December the Chichibu Night Festival brings illuminated floats through its streets; it is included in UNESCO's listing of Japan's Yama, Hoko and Yatai float festivals. Mount Buko, marked by limestone quarrying, stands over the town to the south, and rail lines connect the basin to Tokyo.
A Chichibu map poster shows a town shaped entirely by its setting. The river curves through the frame, rail lines follow the valley, and the mountains leave wide empty margins. The fine grid of the old shrine town contrasts with the open, winding roads that head up into the hills.

Shrine-town centre
Streets around Chichibu Shrine form the oldest and densest part of town, the route of the famous December night festival floats.
Mountain rim
Forested ridges surround the basin, so the built-up area ends abruptly and roads climb out along narrow valleys toward the passes.
