Old Tōkaidō route
The former highway crosses the city as a gently curving street, clearly different from the straighter modern roads, and marks the line of the old Chiryū post station.

Chiryū Map Poster & Print
Chiryū is one of the smallest cities in Aichi Prefecture by area, set on the flat Nishi-Mikawa plain between Kariya, Anjō and Toyota. It grew as Chiryū-juku, a post station on the Tōkaidō, the old highway between Edo and Kyoto. The route of that highway still runs through the city and shows on the map as a line older and more winding than the roads around it.
From above, Chiryū is almost entirely built up. Dense residential blocks, narrow lanes and small farm plots fit tightly together, and the city limits disappear into the continuous suburbs of its neighbours. Rail lines meet at Chiryū Station, where Meitetsu routes join, and their straight tracks cut cleanly through the fine street pattern.
The city is known for irises. The kakitsubata of Yatsuhashi, remembered through an episode of the Tales of Ise, are associated with the gardens at Muryōju-ji, which bloom each spring. A Chiryū map poster brings together the old highway, the rail junction and the tight grain of a Japanese commuter town.

Rail junction
Railway lines meet at Chiryū Station and run across the map in long straight strokes, giving structure to the dense and irregular pattern of houses and lanes.
Fine-grained blocks
Small lots, narrow streets and pockets of farmland pack the plain closely, so the whole city reads as a delicate, almost textile-like mesh of lines.

Chiryū suits people who live there and commute into Nagoya, or anyone who walked the Tōkaidō and remembers the station towns along it. The dense street pattern fills the frame beautifully, and it rewards close looking at a larger size.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can be personalised, perhaps with the year you moved in or a name in Japanese, and there are five styles to choose from: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. The HD files cost $9 and have no watermark, and matte prints ship from partners in 30+ countries.
