Chivilcoy lies in the heart of Buenos Aires province, on the open grassland of the Pampas west of the capital. The land is almost perfectly flat and devoted to farming and cattle. The town's plan reflects this. A grid of square blocks, typical of Argentine towns in the province, extends in every direction with very few interruptions.
Green plazas punctuate the pattern at regular intervals, and railway lines cut diagonally across it, a reminder of how the railways connected the Pampas to the port. Outside the town the grid carries on as rural roads and field boundaries, forming a larger checkerboard that fades to the horizon.
