Constanța faces the Black Sea from Romania's Dobruja coast, and on a map the water takes up the whole eastern side of the sheet. The old town sits on a small peninsula. South of it, the port unfolds as a sequence of long piers and basins, one of the largest harbours on the Black Sea. North of the city, the Mamaia resort occupies a narrow strip of sand between the sea and Lake Siutghiol.
The city was founded as the Greek colony of Tomis, and the Roman poet Ovid spent his exile here. The tip of the peninsula still holds Roman remains, a statue of Ovid in the square that bears his name, and the Art Nouveau casino on the seafront. South of the port, the Danube–Black Sea Canal reaches the coast. It cuts across Dobruja and gives river barges a shorter route to open water. From above, its straight line is the clearest sign of how the city ties the interior of Europe to the sea.

Port basins
Long breakwaters and rectangular docks spread southward along the coast. At map scale they form a sharp, almost architectural pattern of piers.
Mamaia strip
North of the city a thin ribbon of land runs between Lake Siutghiol and the sea. It is lined with hotels and has water on both sides.
