Cumbum lies in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh, in an area of farmland at the edge of the Nallamala hills. The most striking feature on the map is Cumbum Lake, a large reservoir created by damming a gap in the hills, which spreads beside the town. The streets form a compact settlement with main roads leading out toward neighbouring towns.
Cumbum Lake is one of the older large irrigation tanks in India, generally dated to the Vijayanagara period, and it has supported agriculture in the area for centuries. The Gundlakamma river flows through the region, and fields and irrigation channels surround the town on the flatter ground.
