Dār as Salām lies in Sohag Governorate in Upper Egypt, within the Nile valley. Here the cultivated land forms a relatively narrow strip along the river, bounded on both sides by desert. From above, the town is a dense cluster of streets set within a patchwork of small, irregular fields.
