Davis sits on the level floor of the Sacramento Valley, west of Sacramento, and its map reflects that flatness. Streets form a regular lettered and numbered grid in the older core, with curving subdivisions around it, and the whole town is threaded by an extensive network of bike paths and greenbelts that appear as fine separate lines between the roads.
The University of California, Davis occupies a very large campus on the south-western side of town, including open agricultural fields used for research.
