Doka lies in Gedaref state in eastern Sudan, not far from the border with Ethiopia. From above, it forms a compact grouping of streets and compounds on a broad, open plain. Roads run out across the flat land toward neighbouring towns and villages, and the built-up area gives way quickly to fields and open country.
Gedaref state is one of Sudan's main farming regions, with large areas of rain-fed agriculture, particularly sorghum and sesame. Doka lies within this agricultural belt, in a landscape that grows green during the rainy season and dries under the long dry months.
