Dronfield lies in north-east Derbyshire, in the valley of the River Drone between Sheffield and Chesterfield. The old town sits on the lower ground by the river and railway, while large post-war estates, including Dronfield Woodhouse, spread up the western hillside. Seen from above, the street pattern bends and curls with the terrain.
Once a small market town known for its industry, Dronfield grew rapidly in the twentieth century as a commuter town for Sheffield. The Midland main line runs through the valley and gives the map a strong straight line, and main roads link the town to the cities north and south. Open countryside leads west toward the Peak District.
