Irregular lane network
Rather than a grid, the town is shaped by winding sandy lanes between compounds, producing an organic, hand-drawn pattern at the heart of the poster.

El ’Ayoûn Map Poster & Print
El ’Ayoûn lies in the Assaba region of southern Mauritania, in the Sahel belt where the Sahara gradually gives way to sparse savanna. Seen from above, it does not follow a rigid plan. Instead, streets form an irregular web of sandy lanes between walled compounds, with a few firmer roads carrying most of the traffic in and out of town.
The surrounding landscape is wide and open, marked by seasonal watercourses, rocky rises and dry plains. On a map these appear as long, faint lines and empty space, which gives the town itself a strong sense of edge. Settlement clusters tightly where water and roads allow, and thins quickly beyond.
An El ’Ayoûn map poster captures this spare geography with very little ornament. The compact knot of lanes at the centre contrasts with the broad blankness around it, and the few routes leaving town read as confident strokes. It is a quiet, graphic image that says a great deal about life on the edge of the desert.

Open Sahel margins
Beyond the built-up area the map opens into wide, nearly empty ground, giving the composition a strong contrast between density and space.
Roads to the region
A handful of main routes lead out across the plains, drawn as long clean lines that connect the town to the rest of Assaba.
