Elista Map Poster & Print
Elista is the capital of the Republic of Kalmykia in southern Russia, and it sits on the edge of the Ergeni hills where they meet the wide Caspian steppe. From above the city looks compact and orderly. Long straight avenues and regular Soviet-era blocks are laid over gently rolling ground, and past the last streets the land opens into near-empty steppe in almost every direction.
It's the only region in Europe where Buddhism is the main traditional religion, and the city reflects that. The Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni, opened in 2005, is often described as the largest Buddhist temple in Europe, and it sits within a walled, square compound. In the central square, the small Pagoda of Seven Days stands among the civic buildings.
Elista is also known for City Chess, a separate district built for the 1998 Chess Olympiad, with its own streets and a large central hall. An Elista map poster brings these pieces together: the tidy centre, the geometric temple grounds, the chess quarter on the outskirts, and the open land that surrounds them all.

City Chess district
Built for the 1998 Chess Olympiad, this planned quarter on the city's edge has its own street layout. It reads almost like a small separate town attached to Elista.
Steppe on every side
The city stops quite abruptly, and beyond it the map turns into wide, lightly marked ground, a clear picture of how Elista stands alone on the open steppe.

Elista is a city with a character all its own, where Buddhist temples, a chess town and Soviet avenues sit together on the steppe. For people from Kalmykia, or anyone who has travelled there, the map is a clean and distinctive reminder.
The poster can be personalised with your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example a family name, a date or a few words in Kalmyk. It's available in five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
