Elmwood Park is a village just beyond Chicago's western city limits, in Cook County. On a map, it looks like a continuation of the city grid. There are long, regular blocks of houses, straight avenues and a rail line cutting diagonally across the streets, while wooded forest preserves along the Des Plaines River soften its western side.
The village is largely residential, known for its brick bungalows and close-knit neighbourhoods, and has long had a strong Italian American community. A Metra commuter line runs through, linking Elmwood Park with downtown Chicago, and busy commercial streets frame the village on several sides.
