Erandique is a small town in the mountains of the Lempira department in western Honduras. On a map the centre forms a compact grid around a central square, with streets climbing and bending as the terrain rises. Beyond the town, narrow roads wind through steep hills and valleys.
The town is closely associated with Lempira, the Lenca leader who resisted Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century and gave his name to the department and the national currency. The area is also known for its opals, mined in the surrounding hills.
