Erding lies on the gravel plain northeast of Munich, not far from the airport, and its map still shows the outline of a medieval market town. The old centre forms a compact oval of streets and squares, with the Sempt river and its side channels running close by and newer districts spreading outward in all directions.
The town is widely known for two things: the Erdinger wheat beer brewery, one of the largest in Germany, and Therme Erding, a very large thermal spa complex on the edge of town. In the centre, the Schöner Turm, a former town gate tower, is the traditional symbol of Erding.
