Fate is a town in Jilin province in northeast China, and its name is a romanisation of the Chinese name, not the English word. It lies in the broad agricultural lowlands of the Songhua river basin, a region of long, cold winters and wide, level farmland. On a map, that openness is the first thing you notice.
The town itself forms a modest grid. Its streets run at right angles, and a few main roads extend well beyond the last houses. Around it, fields form a patchwork of large rectangles, their boundaries almost ruler-straight. Tree lines, drainage channels and smaller settlements mark the plain here and there, but the overall impression is one of space.
