From above, Fes shows three distinct cities. Fes el-Bali, the old medina, fills the valley of the Oued Fes. Its thousands of lanes are so narrow and irregular that they look more like a texture than a street network. Fes el-Jdid, founded by the Marinids in the thirteenth century, sits to the west with its palace grounds and walls. Beyond them is the Ville Nouvelle, laid out under the French protectorate.
A Fes map poster makes the contrast obvious. The medina appears almost solid, cut by passages too narrow for cars. It is often described as one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world.
