Định Công is a ward in southern Hanoi, where the city's older fabric meets its newer planned districts. From above, both are visible. A dense tangle of narrow lanes remains from the former village, next to the more regular layout of apartment blocks and townhouses in the Định Công new urban area. A lake among the streets gives the map an open centre.
The name belongs to one of Hanoi's traditional craft villages, long associated with goldsmithing and silverwork. The old village core survives as a maze of alleys around communal houses and temples. On a Định Công map poster, that intricate pattern contrasts sharply with the straight roads and rectangular blocks that surround it.
Canalised rivers and drainage channels run through this part of the city, and main roads link the ward to the ring roads around central Hanoi.
