City wall
The Ming-era wall forms a near-rectangular outline around the old city, the strongest shape on the map and a clear division from the modern town.

Gutao Map Poster & Print
Gutao is the town that contains the ancient city of Pingyao in Shanxi province. Its most striking feature on a map is the city wall, a large, roughly rectangular enclosure dating from the Ming dynasty, still intact and surrounding a well-preserved grid of streets, courtyards and lanes.
Inside the walls, main streets cross at the centre, where the old market tower stands, and narrower lanes fill the blocks between them. Pingyao was a major banking centre in the Qing era, and former exchange houses line its streets. The ancient city is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Outside the wall, newer districts and the railway extend in straighter, wider patterns.
A Gutao map poster frames the walled city clearly, with its dense lattice inside and a more open modern layout beyond. Few towns in the world present such a crisp boundary between old and new.

Internal lattice
Within the walls, main streets and narrow lanes create a fine, dense grid of courtyard blocks, very distinctive at poster scale.
Modern outskirts
Beyond the wall, broader roads, the railway and newer districts spread across the plain in a looser, more regular pattern.
