Haining lies on the northern shore of the Qiantang River estuary, where the river widens towards Hangzhou Bay. The land is almost completely flat, and from above it is covered in a fine network of canals and streams between towns and fields. The estuary forms a wide, pale edge to the south, lined by long sea walls that appear as clean straight lines.
Haining is best known for the Qiantang tidal bore, a wave that runs up the estuary against the river's flow and draws large crowds each autumn, especially at Yanguan. The city is also a major centre of the leather industry, and it is the hometown of several well-known writers, including the poet Xu Zhimo and the novelist Jin Yong.
