Hamada lies on the Iwami coast of western Shimane, facing the Sea of Japan. From above, the city is shaped by the meeting of hills and sea. The built-up areas squeeze into river mouths and narrow coastal flats, and green slopes rise sharply behind them. The coastline itself is broken into small bays, headlands and harbour basins.
Fishing has long been central to the city, and Hamada's port is one of the main landing points on this part of the coast. The castle hill above the harbour keeps the ruins of Hamada Castle, and the city is also home to Aquas, the Shimane Aquarium, which is known for its beluga whales.

The wooded hill of the former Hamada Castle rises near the port. It forms an open patch among the closely packed central streets.
Valley towns
Inland, roads and houses follow short river valleys between the hills. They create finger-like strands of streets that fade into open terrain.
