Hameln lies on the River Weser in Lower Saxony, and on the map its medieval core is easy to spot. The old town is an almost oval shape on the east bank, bounded by a ring of roads that follow the line of its former walls. Inside it, the main streets run lengthways, with a finer web of lanes between them.
The Weser passes the old town in a wide channel that is split by islands, with a weir and a lock regulating the flow. Bridges link the centre to the western bank, where the plan becomes more open. Beyond the ring, newer districts spread across the valley floor and up toward the wooded hills that frame the town.
Hameln is known worldwide for the legend of the Pied Piper, said to have led the town's children away in 1284. Its old town also has fine examples of Weser Renaissance architecture, including the Rattenfängerhaus and the Hochzeitshaus.
