Hanford sits on the level floor of California's San Joaquin Valley, and the map shows it immediately. Streets run in a steady grid, the edges of town open onto a patchwork of irrigated fields, and long county roads continue out toward the horizon in straight lines. Small canals and ditches cross the farmland around the town.
The city is the seat of Kings County and grew along the railroad in the late nineteenth century. Its downtown still has a courthouse square and China Alley, a historic district tied to the Chinese community that helped build the region.
