Happy Valley lies southeast of Portland in Clackamas County, Oregon, and its map is shaped by terrain. The city spreads across a valley and up the slopes of several forested buttes, the remnants of the old Boring Lava Field, which give the area its rolling, hilly profile and influence nearly every road.
Most of Happy Valley has been built in recent decades, and its street pattern reflects that: curving residential roads, loops and cul-de-sacs following contours of the hills, with larger arterial roads connecting neighbourhoods to one another and to Portland.
