Hilchenbach lies in the Siegerland, in the far southeast of North Rhine-Westphalia, where the land rises into the Rothaar Mountains. From above, the town looks less like one center than a chain of districts following the valley. Houses and roads fill the flat ground, and woodland takes over wherever the slopes get steeper.
The layout is set by water and terrain. Streets run along the length of the valley, while short side roads climb a little way into the hills and stop at the forest edge.
