Houba is a small town in the north-east of Chongqing municipality, in the mountainous country north of the Yangtze. The landscape around it is steep and folded, so the town sits where the land is flattest, in a valley along a river. Its streets follow the curve of the water and the base of the slopes.
On a map, Houba is long and narrow rather than round, squeezed between hills. Roads leave the valley in tight switchbacks, climbing towards villages and terraced fields on the slopes. Much of the surrounding area is farmland cut into steps on the hillsides, which shows up as a fine, contoured pattern around the town.
